deCycles Pacific Mountains 2010
Journal Entry
Date: June 22
Day 10: Tuesday
Departure: Mt Shasta, CA
Arrival: Susanville, CA

Distance: 133 miles
Highlights: Longest mileage day. Skirt around the southeast side of Mt. Shasta.
Description: Longest day. 133-miles is a major effort. Early to rise and quick breaks are the keys to getting down the road and covering that distance within 12-hours. We did it and averaged around 14.5-mph. My computer calculated over 9000-calories burned in the process. The sun was hot and air was cool. We had three uphill climbs totaling about 9000-vertical feet. The downhills were fantastic. Lots of fun.

Ashley Lewandowski crashed again today. It was no fault of hers, but somehow she gets stuck in the wrong places. She required one stitch on her lower lip. She’ll probably be back on the bike tomorrow. She is one tough cookie. There were a couple other mishaps today resulting in minor injuries. So we had a talk tonight. Everyone was reminded again and again about highway presence, safety, and thinking ahead.

This was the third century of the trip and was probably the most challenging distance-wise. Last week’s cold and rainy 103-mile ride to Woodland is still the most challenging day so far. Tomorrow we are off to Reno. It may seem easy compared to the 133 we did today.
Climate: Sunny, warm, no clouds. Beautiful day. Lows in 40s. Highs in 70s.
Overnight: Susanville Methodist Church
