deCycles Southeast America 2014
Journal Entry
Day 2 ... Sunday, June 22

Start:  Islamorada Island, FL

End:  Miami Beach, FL

Distance:  84-miles

Speed:  16.2-mph

Terrain:  Flat

Climate:  Hot, humid, high 90s.  Downpour in Miami Beach at 7pm

Started off today by attending church services at this host church.   We were extremely well received and treated royally. The deCycles sang their theme song and enjoyed the service.  Then off to Miami Beach at 9am.  A tailwind pushed all the groups to 20-mph pacelines on a Sunday morning in the Florida Keys.  First break was Key Largo, and then on to the mainland.  Now it's getting hotter and the riders sucked in a lot of auto pollution today.  You could tell there was additional stress to the body other than pedaling and braving the heat.  The pollution was oppressive.  Nowhere has deCycles encountered more motorized traffic.  That can take it's toll on the riders over time.  They just need to listen with more focus on how to help themselves.

It seemed to take forever getting to Miami and Miami Beach.  We had lunch in Homestead across from a church broadcasting a screaming minister that could be heard several blocks away.  Glad we didn't stay at that church.  The loudness sounded like a sick person.  Now it was really getting hot.  Some riders are fading.  We will investigate if they are eating breakfast or checking to see if they are taking meds that have side effects with sun exposure.

Pedaling a bicycle in downtown Miami was a thrill.  Got to keep on your toes though.  Lots of activity and buzz going on.  The riders got to swim in the ocean, but a threatening T-storm was on it's way and forced everyone out of the water.  Then we ate dinner at Miami Beach and pedaled by escort to the overnight location.  Fun day, tough day down here in Southern Florida.
