deCycles Southeast America 2014
Journal Entry
Day 7 ... Friday, June 27

Start: Titusville, FL

End: Daytona Beach, FL

Distance: 51-miles

Terrain: Flat, coastline.

Climate: Upper 90s, humid, sunny, hot.  Slight to moderate headwinds.

The veterans are beginning to wonder when the real deCycles trip will start.  They are used to pedaling 3-4 centuries in the first week of the bike trip.  There will only be one century in the first week of this trip and it was on predominantly flat terrain.

Today ended up being a tough ride because of headwinds.  Wind in your face is demoralizing ... especially if all day.  The deCycles pedaled Highway 1 north to New Smyrna Beach and then arrived in Daytona Beach at 1pm.  The early arrival gave the riders enough time to head to the beach for an afternoon of swimming and fun.  Other riders started their work jobs and Norm & Cricket went to SAMS Club to buy $1200 worth of food.  It took up to 3-hours to shop, checkout, pay, and load groceries on the food truck.  The riders are eating like locusts.  We purchased 48 loaves of bread which will only last a couple of days.   We are trying to give them a diverse menu of food that is both enjoyable and performance enhancing.

When everyone returned, we celebrated JD Night's birhday with some cake and ice cream.  The supper and cupcakes were supplied by JD's parents.  The ice cream was donated by the church youth director who works at an ice cream truck company. The donors provided enough food for all the riders and volunteers on the trip.  That was a nice gesture.  Anytime we get a chance to divert from deCycles food is a blessing.

There was one crash today involving two adult riders.  One had some road rash, the other had no scrapes at all.  We mentioned this morning how things can change very quickly out on the road.....even to adult-riders.  We continue to remind everyone of safety and being attentive.
