Day 9 ... Sunday, June 29

Start: St. Augustiner, FL

End: St. Augustine, FL

Distance: 0-miles.  Rest day.

Terrain: N/A

Climate: Mid-90s.

Today is a true rest day.  No excursions planned.  No walking 10-miles around amusement parks.  The riders just got up, moved their belongings into the Penske truck, and prepared for church services at our host location at FUMC of St. Augustine. We joined the Sunday morning service and performed the deCycles theme song to introduce the group to the local congregation.  As usual, we were  well received.  There is always curiosity about this unique group of brave students willing to push themselves beyond their comfort zones.

After the service, the riders were let loose to visit the town of St. Augustine and the old historical district.  This is a beautiful and charming southern town with significant  European influence.  Brian Ellison gave us a history lesson about the area and the influence of Henry Flagler of which the local university is named.  Some riders just stayed and rested at the church.  Some visited the fort.  Some went to a movie.

Upon their return, we had a meeting about how the teams were doing relative to each other in order to streamline all the off-road jobs.  We also adopted a stricter cell phone policy to combat the disassociation that results from persistent smartphone usage.  Now it was time to get to bed by 9:00pm because of an early wake-up time at 4:30am to beat the heat and to beat the upcoming weather pattern that has headwinds in the prediction.  It will be the most challenging day so far on this trip and we want an early start.
